An International Buskers (street performers) Day Proposal
To whom it may concern,
I am writing for your help in the hopes of officially designating September 23rd as the ‘International Buskers Day’ on the calendar, and promote city parades around the world to celebrate the ‘spirit of busking’. It is the day after Autumn begins, I believe that it would be a good time to harvest healthy transformations. The event which gave birth to this idea is described in ‘The-Incident’.
Busking, being the second oldest profession, is an interdisciplinary vocation. Theatre has its roots in Busking: It gave words to experiences that are commonly known to buskers. In the old days, healing and performance often went hand in hand; there was no separation between art, science and the spirit. Busking is an ancient, honorable profession that's been overlooked, mistook and even abused. It's time we paid honor to this ancient-vocation, to which we all have a responsibility, no matter what profession, cultural background or economic status we hold.
I feel ‘celebrating diversity’ is a global ideal. This blog, is to invite ALL... letting the law of serendipity work, and the public decide. (This site will be translated into other languages shortly.) There’s a distinct connection between busking and the ‘basic pop culture concept’ in social media. Both are self-sustaining, creative, and don’t exactly fit the normal ‘work’ stereotype. They celebrate and nurture one’s individuality and wholeness. I believe it’s much needed now, to resuscitate all that’s uniquely human, with the censorship in today’s world. (My “Incident” for instance.)
Furthermore, the organic ebb and flow workings of buskers, whether on a regional or global scale, has its own long-standing history. Buskers abide in the law of serendipity above all. The highest thinking is to go ‘where we’re most needed’. The awareness is instinctual, and we recognize, communicate and work with one another accordingly. This can act as a great template for social change; much study and insight can be gained from this alone, if we look beyond social stigma. A Busker knows this work is a constant, for we, the buskers are challenged daily to look beyond stereotypes, because the moment we inherently ‘judge’, we're proven wrong. We play on and hope to have learned.
The question is, ‘Are you Buskable?’'. I believe we can make most anything ‘buskable’. Since I first expressed the idea for this blog, many have made suggestions mentioned here. I believe this will continue, a joint effort aligned with the ‘spirit of busking’-- between performer(s) and their diverse audience. I’m aware September is not far off, and a parade is improbable in many cities. One idea we can all do is 'Design your own White T-Shirts’ with Busking antidotes. (e.g. ~70% of the world would not get to see live performers in their lifetime if not for Buskers) This is education based and in line with the ‘use what you got’ spirit-of-busking. Let your creativity run wild, and wear your creation however you wish on September 23rd. ((Please keep checking ‘T-ShirtAnecdotes’ for updates and design ideas:) We’d love to see T-Shirt picture postings here. (For the parades or parade-like-events, we’ll promote donation based vendors. Please keep checking for updates and ideas on ‘Parades’. And we welcome additional ideas!) I can see, people from all walks of life walking, walking and performing. This will be a ‘Celebration, Learn to be a Busker for one day, and Busker Appreciation day Day!’.
Sincerely yours,
Jia Doughman
